Scenes & targets
A scene is one screen of your experience, anchored to a target image. Most projects need only one - but you can add more and move between them.
What is a scene?
A scene holds a set of objects (models, images, shapes, sounds), their animations, and the logic that ties them together. Each scene has its own target image. You can send your audience from one scene to another with a Go To Scene action - for example, a menu scene that jumps to different topics.
Setting the target image
- First import the image you want to use as your target.
- In the Scenes panel, use the Target image dropdown to select it for the active scene.

Heads up
The target image is the most important part of good tracking. A weak image (glossy, plain, blurry or repetitive) will wobble no matter what. Read Choosing a target image before you print anything.
Target orientation: Flat or Upright
Tell AR Works how the target sits in the real world so your content stands the right way up:
- Flat - the target lies on a table or the floor (like a printed card). Your content builds up off the surface. This is the default for new scenes.
- Upright - the target is on a wall, like a poster. Your content faces out towards the viewer.
The faded target ghost in the viewport is drawn flat or upright to match, so you can always see where your content will sit.
Working with scenes
- Add a scene with the + in the Scenes panel; click a scene's name to make it active.
- Set the start scene (the one the viewer opens first) with the star icon.
- Rename by double-clicking, and duplicate or delete from the right-click menu.
Tip
Give scenes clear names (“Menu”, “Dinosaur”, “Quiz”) - you will pick them by name when wiring up Go To Scene actions.
